CPLP - Community of Portuguese Language Countries
The Embassy of the Order to Portugal also ensures the diplomatic representation to CPLP. On 29 January 2020, the Representative of the Order of Malta to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, Ambassador Giuseppe Maria Nigra, presented his letters of credence at the Organisation’s headquarters in Lisbon to the Executive Secretary of the CPLP, Ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles.
The Community of Portuguese Language Countries CPLP was launched in 1983 as a community of countries and people sharing the same language. In 1989, at the first meeting of the Heads of State and Government of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and Sao Tome and Principe, the International Portuguese Language Institute (IILP) was initially created with headquarters in Praia, Cabo Verde.
The Community was created in 1996, at the Lisbon Constitutive Summit, which adopted its Founding Declaration and Bylaws. Subsequently, East Timor (2002) and Equatorial Guinea (2016) acceded to the Community. Its nine member states group a population of almost 300 million peoples in four continents. CPLP has also a high number of associate observers.
CPLP stands as a political project founded on the shared language, historical links and common heritage of the Member States. CPLP has three key areas of action: Political and Diplomatic Coordination, Cooperation, and Promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese Language.
The Embassy promotes regular meetings with ambassadors of the Order of the Lusophone countries to Portugal, which aim at exchanging experience, addressing common concerns and aligning responses to similar matters. The last meeting took place in September 2023, to which the Heads of mission of Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinee Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe participated. The meeting was hosted by the Association of Portuguese Knights of the Order of Malta.
